One Page Project Design(Oct. 5th)
The relationship I intend to support is the relationship between human and their dogs. I have a Chihuahua live with me. I always let her stay at home alone when I go to school, since it is inconvenience to bring her with me all the time. She is a sensitive dog, she is easy to get scared by some strange noise. When she hears some noise, she will bark really loud, which not only may bother my neighbors, but also may be bad for my dog’s health. Hence, I want to design a project which supports the long distance relationship between human and their dogs.
I think my project should combine the haptic technology and interaction design. I think there should be clothes for dogs made by haptic technology. The clothes should also combine with camera and microphone. When I leave home, I can let my dog wear the clothes. When she bark, the microphone will record her bark and send a message to me. I can open the camera to check what scared my dog as soon as I receive the message. At the same time, I can also open an App which bond with the clothes on dog. In this App, I can try to pet my dog by using haptic technology. When I touch the screen of the phone, the clothes will receive the signal and makes my dog feel like she is being pet, so that she can calm down.
Two Page Project Design(Oct. 9th)
The relationship I intend to support is the relationship between human and their dogs. And I decide to design three different project from three different sentient beings between human and animals. The three sentient beings I choose were the sense of touch, the sense of smell, and the sense of sound.
Touching is the most general interaction between human and animals, which is also an important way to make my own project come true. As I mentioned last week, my origin idea was to design a project which combine the haptic technology and interaction design. The pets will wear some clothes made by haptic technology. The clothes should also combine with camera and microphone. For example, when I let my dog stay at home alone and my dog barks, the microphone will record her bark and send a message to me. I can open the camera to check what scared my dog as soon as I receive the message. At the same time, I can also open an App which bond with the clothes on dog. In this App, I can try to pet my dog by using haptic technology. When I touch the screen of the phone, the clothes will receive the signal and makes my dog feel like she is being pet, so that she can calm down. However, all I have considered are human-centre design. In my project, I also need to have an animal-centre design thinking. Hence, the problem I am facing right now is how to make the touch by haptic technology feels like the touch by real people. If the touch by haptic technology can not make pets feel comfortable, we can not make pets calm down immediately but make them feel more nervous.
The second sentient being I try to add in my project is the sense of smell. Pets, especially dogs, always have a keen sense of smell. The strange and pungent smells will make them nervous and fury, but some familiar smells will also make them easily calm down. Hence, rather than using clothes, I think I can create a necklet which combine with camera, microphone and smell emitter. When dogs bark, people can receive the message, and open the App to let the smell emitter emit the smell which can make dogs calm down. In this situation, the problem I need to consider is that I must find a kind of smell which can easily make dogs calm down and totally non-toxic.
The third sentient being is the sense of sound. There are a lot of interaction design trying to use the sound to solve problems between human and pets, but I think most of them are useless. The dog’s music, the music which makes dog sleepy, are nonsense. Recoding owner’s voice and play it when people leave home also can not make dogs feel comfortable as well. I will talk more about those poor design project in Bug List. But now, in my project, I think we can use scientific way to find a sound in specific frequency which makes dogs calm down. There are some scientific researches show shat dogs will send and receive some specific signal to communicate with each other. For example, the mother dog will send some specific signal to make her baby dogs calm down. If we can find the signal which mother dogs send, we can simulate the situation between mother dog and baby dog, which can make our dogs feel like stay with their mother.
Bug List (Oct. 9th)
There are a lot of design try to solve the problems between human and their dogs by using the sense of sound. I think most of them are useless.
There is one kind of music call “Dog’s Music”, which could make dogs sleepy. Here is the link of dog’s music: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Vrjf2mzfng. In fact, this music only make people sleepy, my dog feel very excited when she listened to the music.
There is a camera which can be set at home to monitor pets’ behaviors. People can also use the App to open the microphone on camera to talk with their pets. However, the problem is that pets can hear your voice but they can not smell your smells, so they know you are not at home, so it won’t make them calm down. Meanwhile, the camera can only be set at one position with limit version. People can not see their pets from camera for most of time.
There is a series of machines named “Dog translator”. They said it can translate dog’s words into human’s word. I think it is totally nonsense. Because for most of time, dogs use smells combine with some specific vibration from their throat to communicate with each other. It is ridiculous that a $10 necklet can catch the vibration and smells which dogs emit and translate into human’s language.
Design Synthesis Activity: 10/23/2018
After having group discussion in week 3, I decided to cluster my 40 ideas into 4 high-level functional categories.
The first category is an App which bonding with clothes made by high technology. This App serves for interaction between dogs and owners. The clothes should have haptic technology, a camera on dog’s head, a smell emitter, and a microphone. When dogs see something they like, or something they fear, the camera will record them, so that owners can check the pictures of dogs’ favorite items or pictures of items which dogs are afraid for from the App. Meanwhile, when dogs start barking, the microphone will record the voice and send a message to owners, and the owners can open the App to use the haptic technology (which makes dogs feel like being petted), smell emitter (which emitter special smells), and microphone (which can play dogs’ music) to make dogs calm down.
The second category is a robot. The robot can take good care of dogs when owners are not at home. The robot can play with dogs, clean feces and urine of dogs. It can also play the holographic projection of owners to simulate the environment where owners are stay at home.
The third category is using VR glasses to build a VR online society for dogs. We can let your dog wear VR glasses, and emit smells of other dogs, to simulate an environment where your dog is playing with other dogs outside.
All three categories I mentioned before are interactive designs which try to solve the problems caused by separate anxiety. Next, I would like to design an App which serves interaction for dogs’ owners. In this App, dogs’ owners can record special moments with their dogs and share those special moments to other owners. Owners can also make a schedule with other owners about the time to walk their dogs together. The App also provides direct communication between dogs’ owners and some professional persons, such as vets and dog trainers. The App also provides list of hotels, restaurants, parks which are pet-friendly. In a summary, this App will create an online platform for dogs’ owners to communicate with each other and make new friends.

11/25/2018 Paper Prototype
In my paper prototype, I mainly showed the interaction between the owner and its dog and the interaction between owner and other owners.
For the interaction between the owner and its dog, as shown in the video: when your dog is barking at home, you will receive a message which said that “Your dog is barking!” Then you can open the App to see what happen. You can see what happened in home from list. Those videos are recorded from dog’s view. I design four interaction between human and dog. When you are not at home, you can also talk with your dog by using the MICROPHONE button. If you want to make your dog calm down, you can use GAS button, which will emit some gas to make your dog calm down. You can also use TOUCH button to pet your dog by using haptic technology. In the future, rich people can also set up Holographic Projection at home, so that they can use Holographic Projection button to make their dog feel like they are still at home.
For the interaction between a pet owner and other pet owners, it is a online social community which like an Instagram only for pet owners. Pet owners can take pictures of their dogs and upload in the App, so that they can share their special moments of their dogs with other pet owners. Hence, by using our App, pet owners can easily make friends with other pet owners and dogs can also easily make friends with other dogs.
After I made the paper prototype and re-watch the video, I found some problems of my App:
- Some design in home interface need to be re-designed, especially the size of picture.
- Some button are not necessary, I need to delete some unnecessary and inconvenient button, such as the LIST button and TRUMPET button.
- I didn’t design the chat function for my App, I think I can build the chat button to link to another social media App such as WeChat, or iMessage, etc.
